Responding to the intriguing theme of The Alternative Archive, 24 artists reflected on and investigated subjects of meaning to each of them. These interests ranged from the very personal and socio-cultural to the historical and ecological. Each artist worked within parameters set by the curator Paul Moncrieff - a 50 cm x 50 cm square wooden open box with a 7 cm deep edge. Artists responded to this challenge in a range of ways. Some used it as a surface for painting or a frame for mixed media works, while others used its as a base for their three dimensional work. The consistent format unified the diverse artworks and the resulting exhibition was presented as a complete archive of MIX Artists' interests.
