For many years my work has been influenced by early religious, predominantly Christian art.
I am interested in making a contemporary response to this early work I love so much. A strong influence of geometric abstraction also runs through my work.
The piece I have made for Alternative Archive makes reference to a set of embroidered cushions found in the small “Lady Chapel” within The Church of Saint John The Evangelist on the main street of Albany.
At first glance my drawings are not reminiscent of these cushions, the colours are brighter and the compositions, while taking the patterns as a starting point, deviate freely.
I have intentionally tried to push and subvert my own interior “archive” of ecclesiastical compositions accumulated over years.
