The initial starting point for this work was the much-maligned history of the dingo. It existed throughout the great southern region until colonisation when it was classified as vermin with the introduction of livestock farming. The dingo thus appears in this artwork as a negative space.
The dingo placement is portrayed in between spaces and cultures. At times it is illuminated and at other times it disappears in the picture plane. There is a lens like quality to the perspective within the structure of the frame as though one is looking out the back window of a vehicle. (Like looking back at the past).
To me it is a symbol of parallel histories – one ancient and one relatively recent.
In relation to the theme of alternative archive it refers to memory and shared histories through the many peoples that inhabit the region.
