MARGARET SANDERS
For this exhibition, Margaret has sought out some of the last vestiges of pre-settlement landscapes near Bunbury and created a series of paintings which re-imagine the ecologies and landscapes of Derbal Elaap, later known as Port Leschenault / Bunbury. Margaret has long been interested in colonial representations of landscape. She has transcribed some of the drawn elements of Louisa Clifton’s 1841 map drawing of Bunbury into her paintings, including drawn shorelines and notations of settlement. Notably, in her major work Elaap, a figure of an Elaap man and a Bunbury settler have been outlined against a pristine Western Australian coastal landscape.
